Voucher and Backpack Distribution 2011

The distribution to children of vouchers for uniforms etc and of school supplies took place between the 5th and 8th August at two distribution points, one at Beach Way Plaza and the other at the school in La Cienaga.    The vouchers were distributed to children from needy families selected by Sosua Kids mainly on the basis of recommendations received from contacts in the local community.  Backpacks filled with necessary school supplies (pens, pencils, exercise books etc) which had been donated to Sosua Kids over the past year were also handed out to needy children.

The vouchers issued to children are used by their families to obtain uniform items and/or other school supplies from Casa Nelson, the department store in Puerto Plata.  Their issue at the beginning of August should mean that children can obtain the things they need in order to be permitted to attend school before the start of the new school year in the middle of the month.

The distribution and the preparation for it were a large-scale operation - some 440 vouchers and 300 backpacks were handed out.  We are grateful to everyone involved including volunteer helpers and  staff at La Cienaga.
